Southwestern Ontario in motion Physical Activity Survey Report
In the summer of 2009, an online survey was developed to determine how often people were participating, what types of activities they were participating in, and general tendencies towards physical activity. In conjuction with in motion partners, the online survey was distributed widely and publicly available at libraries, festivals and local businesses. 869 surveys were completed by residents from all three counties.
- 40% of maile respondents and 35% of female respondents indicated getting enough physical activity to see significant health benefits
- Respondents with the highest level of physical activity were those between ages 50-59 years old
- A wide variety of activities, including jogging, yoga, cycling, swimming, walking, soccer and squash
- Respondents reported high levels of household chores as part of their physical activite routine
However,
- 23% of female respondents and 14% of male respondents get little to no physical activity resulting in greater risk of health problems
- Few respondents are involved with active transportation. 20% indicated that they did no walking and 60% reported partaking in less than 2hrs per week of walking to work, school or doing errands
- 70% indicated that they never use a bike for active transporation.
- 79% respondents indicated they sit frequently or walk infrequently during their work day, suggesting taht they need to get their daily physical activity outside of work hours.
